Who is at fault, me or landlord?

I'm currently renting a fully furnished apartment. During the hot summer months, the sun came in through the window and melted the plastic front panel of the landlord's subwoofer.

As we were previously friends, I told him about it. His response was:

Some friend, huh. My take is that he left it there, where the sun would shine on it. I never touched it. Also why the hell should I close the curtains just because the sun is shining? That wasn't in the contract. Also the contract is pretty standard, and says that "reasonable wear" is not my responsibility.

It's like a water pipe bursting and me being responsible.

    What do you think?

Personally I'd class it as reasonable wear and tear. If you rent out a furnished apartment, you should expect everything to be written off - and have suitable insurance to cover it all.

How much is the front panel likely to cost?
How much is it to break your lease/contract?
Do you actually want to live there after being treated like this?

Throw some numbers around, and if they're in your favour, throw them at your landlord.

I'm guessing that an empty apartment will cost him a lot more than a new front panel for a sub woofer.
