It is still generally accepted that you do this with most any church or charity. 10% is usually a good figure to use. Many do in all types of religions. I believe that certain Mormon groups do require it.

Catholics generally are expected to donate that much as well. The church has an electric bill, water bill, gas bill, insurance, etc. as well.. It's not much different than supporting any organization that you get a benefit from.

However, most avid church goers will donate what they can and when they have it!

I look at it this way. When I go out to a bar or club and have a good time I tend to spend a good deal on a cover charge (if there is a band) food and beverage. It's entertainment.. Same thing with going out to eat, movies, whatever.

Church is not that much different. You are spending some time in a climate controlled shelter and getting something in return; though calling it entertainment might be considered crass to some, comparing it to that gets a point across.

So if I drop a few bucks to me, it's all the same. I'm supporting a business that gives me something in return. It's not mandatory, but it is expected... How many people skip out on a TIP at a restaurant? Skipping on the offering basket to me, it's the same thing.

If you do not feel obliged to contribute, don't go...
