Go with a big and reliable company that owns their servers. Go with someone that can give you multiple dedicated IP addresses (it helps with SEO) I switched to IXwebhosting 4 years ago and although I've had technical problems I am fairly happy and I will stay with them. Remember that all hosting companies will have more or less tech trouble. There is no such thing as trouble-free hosting.

I think that Bluehost is a pretty solid host although they have trended down a little in the past year. We switched from IX Hosting, which was a total nightmare. Our sites got hacked and hit with SQL injections over and over again with IX. They also had a single interface with all clients in the File Manager which made it easy for people to hit all sites with trojans at once. They were not very helpful in fixing the issues.

 

some pretty good tips here. for shared, inexpensive hosting, i've been using hostgator and am pretty happy with them.
