Sites that I have built on several year old - never dropped domains have grown more quickly. I would not pay a lot more for that though, in a few years a new domain will also be aged. There are lots of several year old names at TDNAM for cheap.

I have (almost) :) I purchased a 12 year old domain, have set up a basic site on it and it now has thousands of pages indexed in Google. Waiting now for the next PR update but when I use PR prediction tools it is predicted as PR5. So we'll see what happens...

I bought http://proxyhost.com within the past year (2002 reg date) and it ranked in the top slots for obvious keywords almost instantly (proxy host, proxy hosting). Not sure what that is worth, but try doing it with a new domain.

I build a private tool for a customer to scrape and look for aged domains when they are put up on tdnam.
He buys a lot of domains, so there must be something about it.

I have bought a 10-year-old domain and put up a fast & sloppy Amazon shop on it. It brings in a surprisingly large amount of traffic. Nothing great though, just more than I would have thought a new site on an old domain would bring. No earnings yet :)

A little later on in the test I have had some success with putting up an Amazon-shop on that 10-year-old domain I mentioned 3 posts up. Still not something I can make a living off, but certainly enough to pay for more than the cost of the domain and it's share of the server, and then a little something to the missus.
