It's quite obvious that Wikipedia gets nice placement on Google. And I noticed that when I started brand new articles on Wikipedia, those pages are indexed and displayed in as little as 15 minutes. It's almost freaky: Write the article, enter it for the first time. Then 20 minutes later search for it on Google and "presto !!" there is the Wikipedia article on page one of Google. How many of you have websites or single web pages related to a Wikipedia article - but where your page ranks better in the search results? What does that mean to you?
it would be very easy to do so for a less competitive keyword , i have never checked that because my niche has very articles on wiki
I remember reading earlier today in Digital Point Forums, where a user posted that Wikipedia had him / her beat for BMW or a particular model of BMW
I have couple of articles on my forum which are even listed in wikipedia and I got lot of traffic from there
I have a couple of sites that used to be no 1 but are now number 2 behind wikipedia. Dropping down a place made less difference than I expected though - the sites are travel related and the wiki description doesn't seem to attract potential travellers, so I still get about the same number of visitors as I did before.
Google is really fast these days. If I publish a new article it will be up within 2-3 minutes as #1 in Google when searching for that keyword. The position is much worse for more competitive keywords though. BTW is it considered good to have a page as #1 for a 2-word search term that returns 2 million results?
I wa ranking number 1 for the keyword "E30" up untill a few days ago, wikipedia was number 2 for the same keyword. Both my page and the wikipedia page have now disappeared from the top though.
Any editing I do at Wikipedia is non-abusive to their system. Some articles are about stuff of minor relevance, and I may even volunteer a photo. I don't even have content on my site about some of the pages. But ... if you want to write an article - one that can help you - and you can add a link to it that actually upgrades the Wikipedia article's content, register under an anonymous user name. Not a name you use. For example, there's this one website on animated knot illustration. A guy with a site like that, could register on Wikipedia with a name like "Yogi Bear" and start an article on knots, if there was not one. Or, if there was one, he could suggest his website (as "this other" website on knots in the discussion area. Good chance another editor would say "sure". If the discussion area is dormant for a week after they post, then there is no reason they should not just go ahead and add the link. But the link they add, should have an awful lot of content about knots. Or, should have something about knots, or photos about knots, that almost no other resource has. But in short - yeah - you can just go over to Wikipedia and start an article. Should be something of interest, or worth knowing.
