My best friend is someone who actively involved with business niche, so he the type of person who will assist me by motivation.
I like to befriend someone who thinks in a similar wavelength as I do. When it comes to poles, it is the opposite side that attracts whereas friendship becomes stronger when birds of similar feathers flock together...

In making friends, there must be of course something in common between us, and that must be the same interest. So we have something or maybe lots to share!
Here is a story for you. I went camping this weekend with a "friend" (more of a acquaintance) and we were just having what I thought was a adult debate. Well turns our the flipped out and started punching me in the face (keep in mind he is a boxer), I throw two punches in self defense, which only makes him more angry (he has a short fuse) and he goes balls out. He has flipped out on other before too. Luckily my friend Greg (a paramedic) was there to stop the incident because I choose not to fight back. I'd rather let the FOOL look more foolish than he already is. As a result I have a MAJOR shiner (black eye) and a few other battle scars just in time for Thanksgiving. =) So to answer your question, I choose to befriend people with values, pride, honor, who respect brotherhood, who are spiritual, and live with a positive outlook on life. I don't have time for scum these days.
