I can't get my head around this, why do people on this forum and others keep banging on about page rank? I notice alot of people selling websites also saying this is a pagerank 4 website so is worth x amount of money. As far as I'm aware pagerank means sweet FA any more in google's eyes so why do people rave about it all the time if it doesn't matter how your site is ranked in search results?
I have an answer for that one, PR is a metric and so people obsess over it. If Google should let us see all the metrics they use, people would be all over those too. I agree with you. I used to have a PR5 site. I was getting about 7500 unique visitors every weekday. Now it has dropped to a PR4 site, and I am getting 9500 unique visitors a day. What me worry? --wiz
"Banging"? PR wave flew already. This what happens today can't be compared to what was two years ago. There were a real PR storm
PageRank still counts - or at least is a fairly loose indicator of some factor that still counts in SERPs performance. Recently I have seen a number of cases where links from high PR pages have had a big effect on performance even though the links were not on pages with a relevant theme.
Good question.. Mainly because people think if they have a PR4 site that theirs should be worth as all of the other costly sites that are PR4 out there. (For Example... say sitepoint.com was PR4 (im sure its higher than that).. And that site is worth 200k or w.e. People are like hey.. that sites PR4 and its worth 200k, lets try to convince people that mines worth 200k as well even though I don't have any traffic.) That's basically the only way I can comprehend it.
High PR may influence the serp result in a positive manner and for those who are in link building and link sales business, PR matters a lot...
I agree with what many people said in this thread about page rank. In my opinion the main reason PR's of 5 or more have real value to their website owners is because Google and all the other search engines will assign them a higher placement in the search engine rankings than other websites with lower PR's. My experience has been that higher placements in the rankings generally equate to higher sales because more net surfers who are looking for specific things will tend to find the higher PR websites before they find the lower PR websites.
I guess PR is a slight measure of a sites backlinks. Although as you say, today PR is not all that important in Google's eyes
