I have a site selling a product and need at least 1% conversion rate to make some money. Adwords and Overture barely break even for me. What else I can try?

If you can't get the sought after conversion rate with those two, you will be hard pressed elsewhere.

They are still the best in terms of visibility and tracking ability (even though it is somewhat flawed)

You would be better off to put more time into those accounts as more specific ads, better landing pages, and better keyword research can improve that conversion rate.

Much agreed. If you aren't converting at least 1%, that may be a sign of a problem along the way. Split Testing, rearranging, etc may be required.

What is the site, or market you are targetting?

Cellular phone Accessories. What is an acceptable conversion rate? 2%? 10%?

If you are using very specific search phrases you could get some high conversion rates for that search, but if your site isn't usable or prices not set right, etc... then you may not convert.

I have seen as high as 50% conversion rates on very specific keyword phrases, of course they aren't very popular ones either.

Yeah, totally depends on your KWs and site.

If you bid on 'Mobile Phones' and expect 1% for the accessories then your problem lies there. If your AdWords campaign are tweaked to the max then your site doesn't live up to the searcher's expectation.

And between these two, there's another million things that could be affecting it.

Much agreed that some markets can turn scarily high conversions, and then others can turn the minimums. I like to think that if 3% is achieved, the money spent can usually be justified as successful. This all depends on many factors including competition, advertisement costs, etc.

Celluar phone accessories can definitely be a touch product to convert based on how cheap, or expensive your products are. I would suggest first and foremost, go out there and see who else of your competitors are selling the exact same products, and analyze your prices against theirs.

Shoppers are usually very comparative so this can be a sign you need to lower price. This is just a possibility.

There is plenty that can always be changed, then split tested.

He's not kidding. He probably has either low volume or bad stats.
