Who controls the internet?

The title speaks for itself, I just wasn't sure if the Google forum was the best place to ask. Since Google is a heavyweight I thought this is probably the best place to ask.

My question really stems from a new marketing campaign I am working on. Just wondering who we think is the "all-mighty" on the web?

    Thanks for any replies :)

Depends on which part of the internet you are referring to. Google is definitely the king of advertising, but like most kings has a lot of rebels wanting to overthrow the king.

Technology on the internet is a lot of times dictated by the dominant browser king, which at the moment is Microsoft. I mean they have 2 browsers, both built in to their OS. MSN Explorer and Internet Explorer. Yet again like most kings they have Firefox trying to overthrow the king.

Then their is hosting to consider. Hosting is one side of it, which I think GoDaddy has a dominant influence in, and then there are domains. Whoever controls the top level domains also has an impact because you see things like a digital product like a domain go from $6.99 to $9.99.

Aside from that you also have your players in the bandwidth category like Level3 and similar providers who when they get in spats with their partners and break deals can practically bring down the entire internet... over a money spat.

And of course don't forget the most critical part... the user. User demands for faster, newer, better web apps, hosting, browsers, whole nine yards, etc. drive the companies to innovate new products and technologies. Although all of the kings listed above control the internet and how it is run... it is the user who dictates what comes next.

In my own head I already thought I knew the right answer. So far, what I thought has been confirmed by 2 people above.

I think the answer has impact on how you market your ideas today, that's why I asked :).

Then webmasters would turn into starving artists. Only they wouldn't get famous and rich after they died.

Governors from all states would have to call in FEMA declaring the internet to be in a state of Federal Emergency. Let's hope their assistants don't have to google to get the contact info.
