I didn't know it was possible to specify CPM ads with Google or do they automatically pay by a thousand impressions.
You have to be targeted by advertisers its pretty sweet deal, I think you get paid for both impressions and clicks...I've had it on one of my sites...
I Think it is better to make a website that interest those of average users apart from webmasters. Then you will not worry about people not clicking your ads.
There is a lot of internet newbs out there that do not know they are ads and probably will never realize they actually clicked on an ad..
Who clicks ads? Well I know I'd take 1,000 visitors from MSN over 1,000 visitors from Google any day.
This is a very interesting topic. This is my first post and I am new to adsense. I used to click when I didn't know they were ads but now that I know about them I rarely click...
When I first started using the internet, there weren't too many adverts... just some graphical banners and popups, which I never clicked, and "newsletters". To be honest, I've always considered internet advertising to mostly promote useless stuff, just like advertising anywhere. Especially graphical banner advertising. I've usually found what interests me by using a search Engine. I don't particularly like to click sponsored results, unless I recognise the site and know it to be good. Otherwise I'll just check through the "normal results" as they tend to provide better information, resources, et cetera. Also, they're more likely to be written by individuals based upon their experience (of solving x y or z problem, or the quality of service provided by x y or z online store) rather than just trying to promote goods and services. I have no problem with someone making money from my clicks; it's not the webmaster's fault that often useless adverts are often served via whatever service they've chosen to use. Sometimes genuinely useful adverts appear that lead to useful sites rather than spam-infested pieces of junk. I think text-based adverts are a lot better idea than graphic ones. Consumes less bandwidth, more pleasing to the eye and there's usually a nice little summary about the site. If an advert on someone's site seems genuinely useful then I'm OK with clicking it. One I clicked recently was about SEO and I found it an interesting site. It offered paid services, which weren't interesting to me, but still had some useful content which was. I'm more likely to click an advert (that seems useful) on a page where content is good, the page is well laid out (i.e. more content than adverts) and the adverts are text-based and well-placed. If a site is over the top on adverts I'll immediately go elsewhere. Admittedly, I have been using adblock and noscript (firefox extensions) for about 8 months or so now because of too much rubbish such as graphical/java/flash ads and popups on what would otherwise be useful sites. Nowadays, if I find a site is good I also check what it's like in epiphany (a Gnome browser - I'm a Linux user), in case their are useful adverts. I've written this from a "user" point of view rather than a "webmaster". As for my friends and family - my father tends to seemingly click useful adverts but has sadly ended up at some useless sites promoting services of dubious legality (like so-called movie download sites which charge a flat-fee for "unlimited movie downloads") when clicking adverts in google results. Some of my friends naively click adverts, popups, et cetera, as they do not realise they are adverts (and sometimes believe the ones claiming: you are infected with x, y or z virus/spyware) and regret doing so later on. I even know some people who try avoid visiting websites as much as possible due to such experiences and only use the internet for MSN Messenger. I think users don't have a problem with advertising on a site as long as it's not over the top, otherwise they grow an aversion to adverts and will refuse to click even if they seem useful. Just my £0.02...
Very well said, Ryan_Uk, that's also one of the reasons i'm wary of clicking on ads - possibility of spyware infection and who knows what else.
Sometimes clicked because they are interesting, sometimes just to see where they go. The sad thing is that the most interesting appear on my site so I cannot click on them but pointing my mouse over I can see where they lead. Apart of this, does not google also pays for eCPM and CTR or just raw clicks?
Regarding CPM ads. Just log into your adwords account (you do have one, right? It's free and gives you alot of insight in how things works) and start a CPM campaign. You'll notice you choose the site you want to place the ads on yourself, google notes the numbers of visitors each site has (10k, 10k-100k, 100k-500k etc). I have several sites with 10k-100k (imps/day) and have seen some money coming from CPM. It's nothing special really.
ok ill say it again for anyone who doesnt know google pays per click to everyone but if u have a large site or and advertiser singled u out u might get per impression adverts
Size of site has nothing to do with CPM. For Harry - Look at the upper right hand corner of this forum. The banner ads you see are CPM
Cool!!! I never knew about this..Did they start this recently? Also, does this mean Google will pay you for cpm only if an advertiser chose to?
