White Hat SEO vs Black Hat Seo

I've been trying to keep my SEO as white hat as possible (though grey does look good on me) and was wondering who out there is trying to stick to this approach?

It seems black hat SEO provides faster and more impressive results, but I feel these will be short lived and penalized heavily in the long run.

I am naive to think that the longer, harder, white hat route is the better route to take?

yes black hat technique is the quickest way to rank in major SE,. but as quick as it is, it is also the quickest way to outrank and get penalized once caught by SE

White hat might need time for your site to rank well but in this technique, its more on a permanent than black hat and as the real and good seo practice this one

But most seo fell in the gray hat category

No, I don't believe that you are naive to believe white hat is what you should be striving for. Black hat is just asking for trouble and can ultimately lead to a lot of hard work going out the window.

A professional SEO makes sure that the SEO techniques they use on a clients site will provide longevity and long term improvement.

Black hat is the SEO version of the cowboys who tarmac your drive without using hardcore so it looks good for 6 months then falls apart. It's even worse, because the drive police won't come along and ban your drive for being resurfaced by cowboys but Google might ban a clients site for black hat SEO.

Black Hat SEO = Unethical, short term and gives SEO a bad name.

I do alot of Black Hat Optimization, however not to generate profit websites or to rank clients but rather to test the algo extremes which assists with White Hat Optimization.

OK.. I will "play" dumb here. Well... maybe not play but:

White Hat= Not doing any off site SEO that would be seen as being a bad boy by google.

Black Hat= Off site SEO that makes me a naughty boy (buying links, spamming backlinks, etc.).

    Is this about right?

If so, I would reckon that less than 10% of the webmasters that are familiar with black hat techniques never use them. In other words, if they have the knowledge, almost all of them use them.

Am I wrong here? I doubt it.

As for the poster, if you don't get caught using black hat, how can it not be better than white hat techniques? Maybe I am missing something.

    :O)

I would think White Hat is better for all the reasons that people have posted above, plus that fact that you don't have to worry about getting caught.

    Nearly.

White Hat = Fully Complying with the Google Webmaster Guidelines
Gray Hat = Deviating from the above plan slightly but now quite the below
Black Hat = Use any and every trick in the book in order to rank

Isn't that exactly what I said sir? lol j/k
    Thank you for clarity.

I would be curious about your thoughts though. If you don't get caught using black hat, isn't it always better? Therefore the optimal strategy is one that uses black hat to the maximum extent that you won't be dropped by google?

Forgive me if my terminology is off. I know not what I speak.

    In short

    White hat - good SEOs
    Black hat - unethical SEOs
    Grey hat - undetermined

Well nearly, you said Black Hat was off site but it's a lot of on site as well including cloaking, keyword stuffing etc.

Ok, the problem with Black Hat and not getting caught "today" is the algo can change "tomorrow" and bring you undone. So, if it's a company website, or a long term venture it's better to do things by the book.

Just the chance of being dropped by Google is why I'm trying to stick to the more White Hat approach.

I don't know. Black Hat just doesn't seem worth it in the long run to me.

You see, I hadn't considered on site. Interesting. I wouldn't think that keyword stuffing would be black hat. Keyowrd stuffing is where you load content with extra keywords, in the extreme. Correct?

    Good point about "today"

From what I see, the primary black hat used by almost everyone with knowledge is paid backlinks, or placing backlinks on blogs as disguised spam comment. Correct me if I am wrong, but Google simply could not punish you for this. If they did, you could use that to destroy any company you wanted. Unless it was possible to track the "placer" of the backlink in some manner. Hmm... Is that possible?

Outside of that, there isn't really a lot of black hat going on. Correct? I mean, we are basically asking if we should spread backlinks through means that are in violation of google's standards, or not? Correct?

For those that choose to place backlinks for a fee, there is no real risk. Correct? Therefore, the correct methodology to use is black hat seo, as it relates to the placement on backlinks.

Or am I still lost?? lol

    :O)

To the poster, what risk is there in placing backlinks for a fee? Why not use it? At worst, you are just wasting a few bucks. At best, you dramatically rise in the serp's. Right?

    :O)
