Which word processor?

I have been using Microsoft Word, 2003. I am very seriously considering migrating to a different word processor because I randomly get an error that shuts the program down- without saving. It claims there is a C++ Runtime error and I lose all my work.

I am completely frustrated, and am looking for alternatives. This error is rare, but when it does hit, I end up losing time and money.

What word processor do you use?

I use Word on a Mac. Over the years I've never had a problem. :)

Before I migrated to Macs, I used Word on windows.

If it's giving you a problem, try notepad. Another option might by Open Office (think that's what it's called--been ages).

Another option would be to hit the save button frequently. I actually do this out of habit. I open a new doc, save it and then start writing. With each paragraph I either hit the save button on my keyboard or hit CMD-s.

I almost figured out the problem. It is a conflict with Word macros and Symantec's Mcafee software.

Right now I have all the macros disabled and haven't seen the error since. All the microsoft-approved fixes didn't work for me. Some saw solution by contacting Symantec, but I don't have the patience to talk to outsourced telecommunications labor.

Open Office is right. If it starts to give me any more troubles, or I do need a macro, that is what I'm migrating too :)

Glad you've had a good standing history with it.

The problem I am encountering is not present in word 2007. Maybe I'll consider an upgrade.

And google docs isn't private? I looked into it and it looks very nice.

As for symantec, I like them. What are my alternatives?

If you're using Norton's anti-virus, switch to AVG. It's free and I've never had a problem with it.

If you're using Norton's firewall, switch to ZoneAlarm. It's also free.

I normally use Word 2007 at home and Google Docs anywhere outside:) Sometimes I get some error messages while using Word but it is very rare.
As for the security in Google's Docs use - it is all about the web, security is never enough :D but so far I haven't published any confidential information so nothing to worry about really;)

Isn't it more than a simple text editor? If I'm not mistaken Edit Plus offers some features for Web page authors?
