Well, I have the ability to do either of those things. The "dog food" is the search query, "2" is the page number. I'm just wondering what would look best for google.

    Or does it even matter?

    My dear friend

you can use any but it is the best to use "http://www.example.com/search/2/dog-food.html" in order to get page authority because not only google but other search engines gives importance to this site url first and believe it more than other url.

So if possible then you should always use above url only. Dynamic pages are crawled and index by google and other search engine but static pages have very good impression.

Cool Mate and Enjoy your day

I use "http://www.example.com/search/dog-food/2/" because it goes with the order of importance; "dog food" : page 2.
".html" is not needed if you are not going to target the keyword "html".
