With many site at the beginning, it means many repetitive hard work for each of them. With only one site, it's much easier to promote and respond to situations. One site is also good for learning, multiple sites distract you from each other and you just don't get the point.
if you have one very famous site then its is better and it is difficult to make 3-5 sites famous then one!
