I second Notepad++. I use it for more that a year now and I like it more than dreemweaver, zend, etc..., because it's not heavy and I can open 50 files without slowing down my computer much. It's just missing a color picker, but there is a plugin for that :)

I have never used Notepad++ but I do like Dreamweaver. You do not have to use the drag/drop system they have for developing a website. They also have a very nice coding system that lays out colors and does some things to speed up your coding. :)

Dreamweaver has a WYSIWYG system.. some people prefer that, but if your only using it as a text editor its far too bloated.

I use and recommend Notepad ++

Best is learn your self and edit using notepad. But if you really dont want to take headache of all these, than I think coffee cup is good option. You can download it from here:

notepad is great for quick edits, everyone seems to be echoing the poster above them, build that post count...lmao.

anyways, i have been using the same program for years and i'm quite happy with it. arachnophilia is freeware, you can create your html and view it with your system browser.

i use the older version, you may like the new stuff, i don't know, but its worth a look.

    new version

Try coding a few small simple sites by plain text editor, you gotta know manual coding to successfully work in a program, any program even if it is wysiwyg, it doesn't matter, you gotta know html.

There are a lot of people using wysiwyg editors and don't know the first thing on website coding, and when they develop a website, they can't "spot" errors and junk code bloating their design created by the program they used.

All wysiwyg editors produce some kind of junk code. You got to be able to filter that manually.
You gotta train yourself to be able to tell what goes and what stays on the page. if you feel that you want to go with a wysiwyg app right away, my personal opinion based on experience is stay away from Frontpage try DW instead.

I like editplus. It color codes tags and gives some templates and stuff. It's a good program and there is a full, non-expiring trial on the site (editplus2.com or something, just search for it). It's pretty handy with the colors, plus it's essentially free, works for me.

I use PHP designer Pro for all my coding..php, ASP, HTML. CSS etc...Dreamweaver and Microsoft Expression Web/FrontPage produces unnecessary code and the page size willl be high. Good only for simple static websites..:)

I use CODA (www.panic.com), it's a mac app though. Has great mark-up options, ability to share/collaborate on the fly with other users, exc built in FTP client, built in SSH client, built in manuals (php, html, css, etc), preview options for several browsers, 'sites' database.. it's very nice.
