go with punbb.org ... you will not regret it ... If you mod it which takes you one day you will have great forum. Of course you can stop with default installation. You will not find faster one !

How easy is it to work with, does it requrire special configurations? Do I need anything special to be installed on ther server? I wanted to modify phpbb index.php page, to put some ppc code but was not able to. Can I modify the templates with Front page express or I need some extra software?
    Thank you,

    phpBB
    + more styles/mods
    - code too old
    - phpbb3 seems that will never see the light
    - full DB access security hole in the past
    - too many security holes in a row per month for my taste
    - use of really ugly preg_*() functions that no one understand, wait, crakers do, so they can hack you forum ;)

    punBB
    + more secure
    + faster
    + nice admin panel
    + nice users administrators
+ news users are added to default group
+ dokuwiki integrate to punBB so easy
    + xhtml output

www.opensourcecms.com has a section to demo the free forum software. Take a cruise through them and make your own shortlist.

    Personally I'd avoid phpBB

Probably exactly why i have issues with it on 98se,the code sucks!! (And they dont care to try and fix it either (Or thats what it looks like after my me$$age i posted on thier site))

    I'd say BEST FREE STUFF

IPB and Punbb are 2 of the best FREE stuff out there (Good scripts,etc....)

    Good luck

And here is my obligatory post for http://www.Mybboard.org MYBB which I have come to enjoy very much.

btw...IPB is no longer free and if you think using an old version that is free is intelligent then you are simply wrong. It has exploits.

Punbb is very nice for a simply forums however it's not very rich in features. By default it does not have a PM system. Fairly easy to install a mod for it but I would think the OP isn't a skilled webmaster.

I would avoid phpbb as well simply because updating it ever 2 months for a security hole sucks. It's also crap for features without modding it up the wazoo.

Anyways...try the Mybb link I posted. They are a good product and free.

MyBB is great and so is punBB. However, I'd really recommend using either vBulletin or IPB (the legal paid versions) as they have a lot of great features and great security. :)

I've used phpBB for years and it does just fine.
As a couple of my forums got large, I switched them to vBulletin.
vBulletin is MUCH better, but phpBB is not bad.

Note: phpBB version 3 is due out soon

have you guys tried smf ?? I think probably the best opensource Forum Software out there!!

    http://www.simplemachines.org/

lots of themes and mods out there. Installation of mods are as simple as download and install. Unlike in phpBB where you edit 1000 files to install a mod lol

    ..:: peace ::..
