Which 'social' sites get a webmaster the most amount of traffic?

digg, SU drive the most traffic (each can drive over 100K visitors), followed by reddit and del.icio.us (max 20K visitors). An up-and-coming bookmarking site is clipmarks.com. If you have something entertaining to post, they can bring you a decent number of visitors.

 

I'm confused as to how digg etc drive traffic. How do you promote a commercial endeavor without getting flagged as spam?

You have to know which ones are essential.
