I got average 1 visit per day from stumbleupon. Digg is not too much better.

I've used digg with limited success. SU hasn't done a thing for me and I'm not sure why so many like this site??

I've enjoyed digg - however it's a battle to have the most recent articles under certain search terms.

Can someone explain how exactly SU works? I have 236 thumbs and 70 fans (pretty consistent I guess) and still no traffic. Only one day I had 1000 and then ... none

That's because SU is in spikes. I have pages that get a spike in traffic, and then almost nothing for a few months, and then another spike. All it takes for a new spike is one user to thumb up that page afresh - is my theory anyhow. A power user will create a larger spike then a 'normal' one. Of course it gets really big if after the power user another user thumbs up the site. But at some point all the people relevant for that page have seen it - or it gets too many thumbs down. A few months later, someone thumbs it up, SU sees it positive history, sends it to a new group of people - who haven't seen it yet because they signed up in the meantime or something - and a new spike is born.

There is also the fact that we only see the thumbs up. Thumbs down are (luckily) anonymous. This means that for every thumb up, you may have 10 thumb downs.

I see, so the most important is not the number of thumbs but their rate. The site must be thumbed daily/weekly to increase spike possibility.

Your theory sounds a little more scientific then other thought I had ...

StumbleUpon by far... With all of them you have to build up your network behind you or you'll get no traffic.

    del.icio.us is all right.

    Stumbleupon is the best, though.

IMO you have the best chance of reaching a broad range of people, including non-web savvy, through StumbleUpon. It also (IMO) has the best traffic targeting. Digg is very tech-focused.

Yes, certainly. I had someone contact me who didn't know how to thumb up a site (it's so simple, one click on the turned up thumb).

But for SEO it's better if the traffic is web savvy: people are more likely to do more then just visit - but also link and tell others about the link.

Is it just volatile traffic or do some of them linger?

On my site stumblers do linger and come back. Some bookmark on delicio as well. It's even gotten me a few direct links to the pages that got stumbled. Not too many, but hey, every link counts. :)
