Which sites should you reject in dir submissions?

    Ok, need some advice now.

I am getting about 50-100 submissions a day and I am sure it will increase.

I only have to time to spend about 10 seconds to review a site due to the hurry (the site is not my priority) and I check the home page (some times subpages), listing title, listing category and then I approve (or reject). I check 10 at the same time.

Now I need some advice on which ones actually should be rejected.

I have rejected all adult, spam, or "sites" that are not really any site.

But what about pharmacy sites? (I will actually remove them because I am opposing drugs)

    Poker sites?

    Can these hurt the dir?

What are your guidelines? Anything else to think about in terms of the content of the site?

    Thanks a lot.

    Id reject, spammy sites completely.

Clean looking sites that are not banned by google should be ok. Id also remove poker/pharmacy sites because I hate them. They spam my blogs way too much.

I spend 10 seconds reviewing a site that will be deleted.
I spend 1-5 minutes reviewing sites that will be listed.

My guidelines says than I'm looking for good sites. I want clean good sites with real content. If I don't like a site I won't add it.

Of course, no pharmacy, online casinos, adult, made-for-adsense sites, neither sites with little content.

Sites submitted to the wrong category won't be deleted because of that.

It all depends on your target audience, if its a general directory then it depends on the category.

I normally go by my own instincts, if i think its a site i would visit and think yeh this site is ok then ill add it, but if its messy, dont have content, too many ads or is simply content that has been pulled from other sites (like a site that uses purely only free articles) then i would reject them.

So the general feeling seems to be that editing according to your own personal biases of what is useful is the right way to go when building a directory? Or am I missing something?

I get your humor. I firmly support the belief if you build a directory it should meet your standards.

I reject referal links, inner pages of the domain, Inappropriate title and description. Some times people make duplicate entry which i directly remove without having a look. I also Reject links if the submitter hasn't chosen the right category.

Well, that depends upon the goal of your site.

If it's "Bob's Directory", then the criteria should be "These are sites that Bob likes."

If it's "Directory of Colleges and Universities", then the criteria should be "Is this a college or a university?"

If it's the Open Directory Project, well, you get the idea.

    I have a general directory ( in my sig ) and I figured out pretty quickly that you're going have to ban A LOT of sites. I get a lot of advice saying "just as long as they're not banned from google" and IMHO this is not good advice. I check;

    1) Banned by google, msn AND yahoo.
    2) ADULT I accept as long as they have met compliance AND have a verifier/disclaimer button for continuing on to anything pornographic. I also ask for free membership to really research as porn sites can require hours of research. kidding....
    3) Portal pages a NO.
    4) Subdomains are tricky it needs to be content different from the domain such as a forum or directory or personal page/etc. If they use a subdomain for a category in their store it's probably to minimize banning content from search engines and if they're already setting up a defense for being banned it means they're expecting it so I don't accept.
    5) Up to you. Some sites that aren't completed or are just useless or offensive to you just don't accept.
    6) Pharmacies can be illegal but more important to test the quality of the products offered before considering, if you need help with this PM me.

    Hope this helps.

Grammar, spelling, case. These are the biggies with me.

Here are a list of guidelines we use in the KingBloom Directory:

We will not accept these types of submissions

    *Sites Advocating Violence or Hate.
*We do not accept websites using pay per click services as primary content.
*Submissions with more than one popup or load behind per page.
*Actual or fraternal mirrors of other sites.
*Unique websites offering the same business or service.
*Islam or Muslim Terroist Related Sites
*Sub domains that can be readily and easily reached from a main page.
*Sites that promote directly or inderectly illegal activity of any kind.
*Sites considered of poor quality by the reviewing editor.
*Redirected sites. Sites that redirect to a URL not within the submitted domain.
*Submissions with titles and or descriptions not in English.
    *Sites not using proper case.

Also, use things like image verification on your submission page. It cuts down on the clutter, spammers and pure junk. Also, if you can modify your directory script you can do things to group submissions. That is what I did. I have my submissions organized with "Rush" submissions being first. This contains any submissions that are PAID. They get TOP priority. Next comes Regular submissions, and those that our bot has already pre-qualified as at least existing. If those sites do not exist or are unreachable they end up in another queue where they are checked for several days and if they are not active after a set period of time they are automatically rejected. Sites that do not follow the most basic of rules are nuked immediately.

You can fully automate your system, while still maintaining a human edited touch. Just make sure the automation deals with the basic/simple stuff. Leave the real site approval process to yourself and you will have a nice clean directory for years to come!
