I am interested in knowing which is important for a server?(dedicated) Whether RAM or processor? if I have more RAM whether I can run more processes ( cron jobs..) Also tell me whether this processor AMD Sempron 2600 can be used for a server? what about it's performance?
AMD sempron i think was veyr common in laptops..no idea how good it is in dedicated.. more RAM is deifinitely the way to go if you plan to be high on CPU resources, though a couple of Cron jobs shouldnt hog it down, since its dedicated and not VPS, but if multiple high b/w proxies are to be estabilished..minimum 1 gig RAM shud be there..and not Bursted..i mean gauranteed..
As for the CPU, AMD semprons on the AM2 socket is definitely better than the celerons. A lot depends on what applications you'd run on the box.
I am going to run a min search engine?Whether it can withstand it? Also whether layeredtech.com are good hosts? They seem to be good but they are self managed ,I know to manage a dedicated windows via plesk but not entirely Whether it is good to be self managed?
This totally depends on your application and what it's bottleneck would be. If you're running a web server that serves static content RAM is king. If you got more dynamic content then CPU is going to be important as well. If you're heavy on the database then the hard drives will start to matter as well.
Ram VS CPU that is always a tricky one, CPU defines the maximum amount of script you can run at once, so does ram. an example. if your script uses 0.1% cpu for 1 second when it is run, you can run that script 10 times a second. if you script uses 0.01% cpu for 1 second when it is run, you can run that script 100 times a second. Now ram, that is different, If your web service (usally apache or IIS, using apache for this example.), has a 50meg foot print (that means it uses 50megs of ram for every copy running), and you have 512 ram in your server avaible (ignoring os and other programs to make it simple), you would be able to run 10 copys of apache. Which would mean that the script that uses 0.1% cpu would run fine, but the script that uses only 0.01% would use all the ram, and go into swap. Generaly RAM AND CPU dictate that maximum thoughput of your server. if your just starting out, a semp 2600 with 512/1gb of ram will be over kill, as your site grows then you'll want to either get a new server or upgrade the hardware. you can easily run a medium sized site on a server with that spec as long as the scripts aren't badly written (most popular software is written decently and won't be an issue)
I am going to run a mini indexer that is mini search engine that is capable of indexing 50000 pages in an hour! Will it out too much load!
Are you going to run any open source/commercial script or custom script? It's name please. I'd definitely suggest you to go for a box with dual-core processor, 2GB RAM, 100Mbps network port and SATA2 hard disks to suit your purpose.
It is a custom script made by me, I have already tested it in a vps of 512 MB RAM Even with that I could index about 100,000 pages in a day. I am looking for a dedicated as I could index more. I know basics about how to manage a windows server using plesk, Whether it is good to have self managed Windows servers? for me.(using plesk)
Do you really require a windows server? I'd prefer Linux platform where you can get plesk too. BTW, you can start with a single processor box too...but I have no idea about the growth of your search engine. BTW, check these deals with free plesk. And my review of dedicatedbox.net
Yes I could manage linux with plesk, but if it is unmanaged then windows is lot easier than linux I think so! I had this custom package from layeredtech.com 64 Athlon 3800 Dual Core RAM: 2GB Free Hard Drive(s): 160GB Bandwidth: 1500GB IP Addresses: 8 Addresses Windows Standard $30/monthly 100Mbps port Free Plesk 30 Domains $12/monthly Is it a better option for my needs? But Dedicatedbox.net also seems to be good!
AMD sempron is just like Intel Celeron good for low end servers with small sites (don't try hosting big sites/proxies on that) Getting a single p4 server won't cost much more (maybe extra 10-20$ max) but you will get much better performance but it depends on your budget after all
