In my point of view if you only go for quality work all the three are not a waste of time, just don't run for quantity than indeed you are wasting your time.

I've always felt any directory submission other than DMOZ was a major waste of time. Way too many directories are setup by people with a marketing intention. When I first started online I would try directory submits feeling like it made practical sense to try and be where ever you could be listed for free. All I got was loads and loads of marketing crammed into my inbox. As far as article marketing... it's worth your time if you truly have something 'meaningful' to say. If it's done just to get the backlink, then I'd agree that it's kind of a waste of time for that. I predict more and more weight or relevancy is going to be given to the sites that earn their stripes via the social networking route. Which leads nicely into my opinion on time spent on forums. I totally disagree with you, time spent on the right forums is going to pay off big time when viewed in the context of the roll it plays in the whole social arena. Lets face it... online businesses, just like offline businesses... live and die by referrals. And you have to be 'out there' - where your clients and customers can find you, to earn a reputation worthy of gaining referrals.

Diversified link sources is good from the overall SEO point of view.
