    in the days when Yahoo category listings where the king Sh$t all my traffic came from them. Now they changed their system so that yahoo directory listings mean crap all

    AltaVista showed in my logs similar to Google does now, then Yahoo came through for a while then of course Google took top spot.

    My website is too new (1999) - but I do know here in the Netherlands altavista was the one search engine before google changed things forever.

    Definetely Altavista at the beginning. Then Yahoo made a pretty strong showing in the logs, right before google cleaned up!

    several "old major" SE with similar percentages
    like
    excite
    lycos
    hotbot
    altavista
    yahoo
    infoseek
    and many others

    most of the did NOT drop out because of Google but because most started to commercialize/charge for listings and kicked themselves out of main-business stream
