Google because it's easy (I use their tool bar) and the results are good.

I know people who use msn because they are novice users and their ISP sets their homepage when they sign up and they never change. Their ISP has an arrangement with MSN so they use MSN. They don't think about why or what else.

I don't know anyone who actually uses anything other than google or msn - or do I?

    Hey Mike,

You know, it really depends on what you're looking for.

Ever try to find audio with Google? Singingfish.com is much better for that, and so is the new Yahoo Audio Search.

For reference stuff, Answers.com is tops, but so is factbites.com.

Video? I like Yahoo video and Singingfish.com again, although AOL video is coming out with some great improvements.

For Flash movies, I like Google (filetype:swf) and Yahoo video

    For how to's, ehow.com can't be beat.

Google is great, but I think that in this day and age of content overload, in order to optimize your experience in finding just what you're looking for, you need to go beyond the 'one-search-engine-fits-all mentality'. It's a major time-waster (IMHO).

Decide the type of content you're looking for and use the appropriate search engine. There are specialized search engines for images, audio, video, podcasts, rss, blogs, news, ebooks, Flash movies, music, how to's, and so on.

A bit of advance thought of what you're looking for, combined with the right search engine will go a long way to helping you find what you want.

I know this is going to look like a shameless plug, but I once tried to wrap my brain around the question of 'which search engine is the best', and I found that it all depends on what you're looking for. They all have major stengths and weaknesses (even Google).

With that in mind, I developed www.whonu.com, which lets you enter your keyword once, but explore results from many different search engines.

Give it a whirl, and I hope it helps you.

    All the best,

    Derek Franklin

Totally agree here. Some markets are better searched in Yahoo and some on Google.

Just depends on what you are looking for. I hop back and forth between them.

the best search engine is www.lostse.com :p (Yeah that is my one :p)

Nah, the current best search engine around? I would say MSN as MSN to me provides up-to-date results and at current crawls are much nicer and newer thus meaning it helps when researching a certain topic.

Yahoo! seems to limit the number of requests in a certain timeframe. While obviously google does not limit the number. However don't think that something If it's not in Google, then it is non existant. Try in yahoo and other search engine probably you can find it.

OK, here's one that will knock your socks off!

AOL Search - enhanced by Google:

    http://aolsearch.aol.com/aol/webhome

Since results are enhanced by Google, you know they're good, but in addition, AOL's results page, many times, provides some pretty intelligent tools/help, depending on the query.

    Try these queries:
    Einstein
    Superman
    sleep disorder
    Golden Gate bridge
    Beagle
    Indiana Pacers
    Indianapolis 500

Their audio/video results are pretty darn nice too - make Google look like Notepad for search :)

Probably google because both my preferred browsers search boxes start there. That and it is pretty simple and quick. When I cannot find something with Google, I tend to use dogpile so I can get a quick overview of searches from all the main SE's.

If I'm looking for something new - I use yahoo

If I'm looking at relevant resuts - I use Google

    For research - Google Scholar
