Tablets and laptops are being combined these days. I have a Laptop and and iPad but the laptop gets used 90% more than the iPad does.
I prefer a desktop to use in the house for 24/7 operation. (I have 2 that have to run all the time.) I prefer a laptop for use when I'm not at home, but will be at a desk or table. I prefer a netbook when I need a real computer, but I won't have much more than my lap to use it on. I prefer a tablet to use on the go. And I prefer a smart phone when I don't want to carry anything but I still need access to my data and some apps. I don't hammer nails with saws and I don't cut wood with hammers - I use the tool that's best for the job I'm doing at the moment.
Both. the laptop is handy for hauling around locally. I take my tablet to work to use on lunch breaks, and it's much more convenient for traveling.
Depends on your budget on what you want to do. Video games? Watching DVD or Blu-Rays? School work? Video editing? Watching streaming videos? You can acclomplish most everything with 4 core i5 Laptop or Desktop. Tablets still have limitations in terms of high end video games, playing DVD's or Blu-rays and editing HD video. The advantage to tablets is budget. You can get a good tablet under $500.00 Webcasting Advice

You can turn your smartphone into a mini laptop by getting a bluetooth fold out keyboard - great for typing notes or email instead of the touch screen
to me tablet is such a useless device it is just a large ebook reader with media and nothing more. i would prefer laptop anyday over it. for playing games desktop is the best , and for everything else laptop is great . And for a portable solution a smartphone is amazing . i will never buy a tablet ever
Don't'rule out tablets just wet for those of you who dislike tablets. Tablets at this present stage are like laptops were back in the late 90's. Laptops were very popular and expensive back then with half the power of a desktop and were mainly used for almost the same purposes as tablets are used today. Sales, education, web surfing, shopping, emailing, etc. But they weren't used for high end gaming, video editing, high intensity photoshop, live webcasting and now laptops are being used for that. The new Intel Haswell i7 due out this june of 2013, will have twice the speed of a 1st generation i7 (920 i7) with only half the amount of power consumption. With processors becoming much more powerful with much less power consumption, make no mistake, we will have tablets as fast as desktops and laptops within 5 years. As tablets become more powerful and begin attracting the high end gamers, live webcasters, video editors, graphic artists, etc. Tablet makers will need to make them expandable such as including plenty of usb3 inputs for adding external hard drives, ext. blu-ray burner or player, keyword, mouse, etc. I actually wrote this reply with daughter's iPad.
