For gallery, I'm seriously digging Phoca Gallery (http://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery). It is feature-rich, and has a plugin architecture to allow you to extend its functionality. Oh, and did I mention it's FREE. :)

Phoca gallery can handle several multimedia types, including Flash, MP3 and MP4 now in Version 1.2.0 (http://www.phoca.cz/news/30-phoca-news/282-phoca-download-120-beta-released).

You can read up on it here:
    http://www.phoca.cz/documentation

    The demo site is here:
    http://www.phoca.cz/demo/

Now, if you want to get into some really serious video stuff, more along the lines of a Vimeo, YouTube, etc., here are some more recommendations:

For video, there are two I really like. The one I am using (actually, customizing for my new site) is HWDVideoShare (http://hwdmediashare.co.uk/). There is a free version that you can download and test for free. From what I can tell, the only thing really missing from the free component is the ability to create new categories. I appreciated this because I could fully test drive the component before committing to it. If you test it, and want to get the fully featured package (which includes component, modules, themes, etc.), HWDVideoShare uses a subscription fee structure (meaning you pay so much per year depending upon how many sites you want licensed). This is REALLY dirt cheap, something like $30 USD for up to five (5) domains. This also includes access to the support forums, and I think priority help. I can tell you the HWDVideoShare development team is top-notch, and very active on the forums. HWDVideoShare is listed at the JED and is fully GPL/GNU.

A second one I've seen (while working on someone else's setup) is JomTube (http://www.jomtube.com/). It's lean, mean, and aesthetically pleasing. This extension is NOT listed in the JED because its licensing is NOT GNU/GPL. However, the code is fully open source (meaning no encryption). This extension uses the same fee structure as HWDVideoShare (meaning you pay for a subscription), and is a bit more expensive at around $59 USD for 6 months, and $80 for one year. Still very affordable all things considered, and priority support is included in the subscription. A full explanation of the subscription plan is here:
    http://www.jomtube.com/why-should-i-subscribe.html

Please note that for both of these products, if your subscription expires, it just means you can no longer download updates. Your license to use the product remains intact.

The ONE caveat I give with any video solution is that your host server must be properly configured, with at a minimum FFMPEG (FFMPEG-PHP is also strongly advised), LIBVORIS, FLVTOOL2, LLAME and several others.

    Hope this helps. :)

Check also this one. You can add videos and pictures too. Everything is going to be divided by albums.

For Photo Gallery I used simpleviewer on my site, take a look here
    http://www.joomlagarage.com/design-portfolio.php
It's really neat and very easy to embed on your site.
And it gives you a lot of control on customizing as it is not a plugin/module.
    For simpleviewer go here
