This is a matter of some debate in SEO circles, but I suspect if they were as good at dectecting paid links as they claim, they wouldn't need a narc line.

That said, some links are certainly easier to detect than others. Links in a section titled something like "link" or "sponsor" are certainly easy to detect. Perhaps a list of irrelevant links is detectable, but I'm not convinced that determining the relevancy of links is all that easy.

Probably the easiest paid links to detect are those that are NoFollow'ed. ;-)

Millions of gremlins monitoring the internet for Google all day and all night... :D

I would imagine that paid links are only a factor in their overall formula, meaning that if you have enough of the 'good links' you should not have to worry about it.

I read Matt Cutts saying on his blog that, Google can even differentiate each and every pages and all links on it through their algo. I doubt it.

While most of their policing can be algorithmic, a touch of human element must also be involved with hundreds of Google spies web-hopping 24x7.

If Google encourages users to report paid links, then they have not 100% working algorithm. But they can improve it using the user submitted data...

Some kinds of automatically inserted paid links can be detected by the tool from my signature.

Not many. Most sites are penalised by webmasters who have other sites in the same niche and dob the site into google. 99% of sites don't get penalised by google they often get rewarded with better SERP rankings.

Is difficult to detect these paid links. If there are a lot of them (and non related) i think don't pass PR.

Yeh for the same niche its pretty much impossible. But if you have sport links on a medical website than thats easy but won't be dealt with unless someone is reported. :D

They cannot detect paid links automatically, think about it, how many times google made things public about their stuff? They are usually silent, but now they make this paid link thingie public because they cannot handle it automatically and they try to discourage webmasters from getting into buying/selling links.
And I cannot imagine what kind of people waste their time by reporting paid links to google.

i didn't think Google penalized off site optimization, as one of your competitors could buy some cheap links to your site just to get you penalized. What does everyone else think?

Buy links is the easy way to get PR and you'll probably get banned for it.
Just trade links with like minded sites and stay active on forums and your PR will go up.
Its not worth spending money on something thats not a real guarantee.

Your competitors can also report your site if you are selling links...
