Hey everyone I just purchased a vps from ovh and installed cpanel. Now I have realized that it requires a license as well.... how stupid of me. So now that I am going to re-install an operating system, now I want to know which one should I go with. I think you know you which are available on ovh. I want to run 2 domains, one having wordpress and other one a script (php that is, I guess). Regards
As a beginner, check out Ubuntu. Lots of tutorials, good community, and apt-get has a lot of up to date software. A linux distro with almost as many tutorials for a server environment is CentOS, and it's very stable.
I have install ubuntu 14.10 this time, which other software do I need to install? If there is a free cpanel then suggest it to me.
Do you have any expirence with CentOS or Ubuntu. However both use different package management, so if you have expirence with either then go with that.
There's a free cPanel alternative for both Ubuntu and CentOS called Webmin. Loads of plugins, and it's been under development for over a decade now I believe. http://www.webmin.com/ It's actually got some pretty neat features. Backing up to Dropbox for example. But, if you're feeling adventurous and actually want to learn a lot about system administration--try doing things without cPanel. Also, use google apps for your email--it just works, and you'll save yourself a lot of stress.
You will need to login to your Domain registrar and edit your DNS settings to point to the new IP addresses.
Well, with this lack of experiences, you'd better go with CentOS and VestaCP, as they are all free and there's tons of knowledge in google upon combining them into hosting environment. Wishing you all the best in your journey.
