Hi, I am totally new on VPS side. Recently i am having interest on getting a VPS. But before i take a vps, i would like to get all of your suggestion. Most VPS provider gives an option to choose an Operating system and Control panel. Operating Systems Available: CentOS 5 Fedora Core 4/5 Debian 3/4 Gentoo Ubuntu Control Panels Available: cPanel/WHM DirectAdmin Webmin LxAdmin (free) I have no idea which will be good operating system for a VPS. Please suggest me. Also i am with free LxAdmin. But how many domain can i host on that? Regards, Tanbir
Hmm i'll take centos+lxadmin, centos is the best for servers, stable and easy to manage, debian is good also, but take centos, as control panel I would choose lxadmin, is light and fast, cpanel is slow and wastes a lot of resources.
I agree that CentOS is the best, LxAdmin is good for personal use and VPS that do not have much memory. If you have enough memory and plan on hosting customers, I would definitely go for cPanel.
It all depends on your system resources, if your selling web hosting then cPanel is definately a big plus for your potential customers. But, if your VPS doesnt have a significant amount of resources, cPanel will run very slow. If you are hosting just a single site, something along the lines of DirectAdmin or LxAdmin with around 512MB RAM will do. As for your operating system, I personally use CentOS 5
If you decide to use cPanel make sure you have enough resources, or you will end up with a slow overloaded VPS. 1-2GB of ram would get you running smoothly
If you cannot choose which OS, you should have a managed VPS, and have the admin choose the OS for you
DDHS Bob is right. You need at least 512mb ram to run cpanel/whm properly.. btw, i would go with centos 5.. if you are on tight budget, probably go for a free lxadmin.. next is DA(small fee).. but i would use cpanel if given the choice.. -- joseph
My vote for what OS to use is Debian, most people are stuck in the redhat mentality an don't realy give it a chance. I personally thinks its a better platform, and it uses less resources.
thanks guys for helping me out. i am going with centos 5. now i am confused on which control panel should i go with. i have got two options of free control panel: LxAdmin and Webmin/Virtualmin which one should i go with.
Webmin is more of an advanced control panel, and could be hard for you to configure your site if you dont know what your doing. You will probably be better off with LxAdmin as its light weight, and easy to use, and resembles cPanel a bit if your a fan of cPanel
How many domain can i host on Lxadmin and webmin? i heard that lxadmin can host upto 40 domain, what if i want mode domain to host. is webmin supports unlimited domain?
i totally messed up with my vps. damn its too confusing. i even dont know the coding. i need to run my sites asap. i got 2 ip address, root login and pass. hypervm login and pass. now what should i do. where the hell is lxadmin? i just see a install lxadmin icon on hypervm and many more stuffs. i even registered nameserver with both ip's. changed the nameserver of my domain. still i can't ping my domain. bad request. someone please help meee....
Hypervm is just the vps manager, install lxadmin via hypervm, to login in lxadmin http://ip:7778 or domain:7778
Hi, I recommend to our customers to use what they are most comfortable with. Have you used any of these control panels before? If so unless there is something you don't like about that control panel/OS I would suggest you use that. In the end it is all a matter of personal preference.
