Which one is best for a dedicated? Which one will be safer, smoother and uses less server resources?

since 11+ yrs I most successfully use linux (openSuSE). but to make all even more efficient, i use exact same OS on my laptop as well. that creates an offline testing environment and thus gives me a better understanding on how server works and makes all server configuration more transparent to me.

Same here, Centos 4 or 5. Personally, I like 4 better, just me though.

Take a look at FreeBSD 7 for actual server needs - it's excellent! Compare performance for yourself, and decide.
    Good luck!

CentOS or RHEL is the best for servers. Ubuntu is beating the line and coming up forward, but unfortunately the best control panel of them all, cPanel, isnt supporting ubuntu yet. But if you are fine with plesk, Ubuntu should work good for you too. The good thing about ubuntu is that it is quite easy to manage, installing a new package is really easy, and you have loads of manuals are available just a google search away.

I wouldn't put anything but FreeBSD on a server. It's made for that environment.

What's with all the spammers bringing up old post threads today?

FreeBSD is the best performance for the server but need little bit know unix system.
CentOS is the best for control panel compatible and other software compatibles..
