Phpbb is the best. Just use the latest version, bcause the old ones does not support PHP5.

vb > phpBB by far out of the box

phpBB however can seriously give VB a run for it's money in the right hands. I'm a pretty good judge, I'm currently using both. My phpBB sites are more SEO friendly and easier to customize, page loads are identical (as far as I can tell). I don't know anything about simple machines, but their probably better than phpBB out of the box too.

The default phpBB install blows nuts.

Obviously IPB is better, entire code is OOP, extremely complex and easy to understand, no stupid coding mistakes and security holes like in other forums, fast response to any bug and problem, and so on ...

I've been a vBulletin user for years and think their support and product development is great.

PHPBB seems to have a lot of issues of being hacked recently.

I have not used IPB, but I know it is no longer free.

IPB is a lot better. Use the 1.3.1 version if you don't want to buy it. ;)

PHPBB seems to have a lot of issues of being hacked NOT just recently, its being hacked all the time, every update, every fix, and every patch.

VBulletin, hands down. It's worth it in the long run, if you're serious about it anyway.

Couldn't agree more. The features offered to forum users such as "forum subscription" are so much better.

phpbb is good for support and hacks, but the constant upgrades and overall difficulty is enough for me to encourage you to think twice before getting it.

Just so everybody knows, you cannot use IPB legally anymore unless you purchase it and download it directly from IPS. If you download 1.3 or any 2.0 trial version, you are not doing so legally. The only people who can use those versions are the people who obtained it when originally released...an exception to this would be a host providing free IPB hosting - but only assuming they are doing it under their own domain.

Now, which do I prefer from the list? IPB

Which do I prefer from the list that is free software? Tough call, but I'm goin with SMF

I am testing punbb recently and I am very impressed with it's simplicity. Layout can't be easier and they have a few very good mods too.

    http://www.punbb.org

My site I use this on is here:
    http://www.animalcrossingwildworld.com

I set that up in no time. The entire layout is xhtml compatible and you can do everything you need in css for layout changes.
