Best is a combination of;- Update, update and update (WP, plugins and themes)- 3-5 known security plugins- safe backupping- file and directory access settings (chmod)- hide WP version / hide WP errors- secure wp-admin directoryThis is some basic security, I blog about WordPress Security (Dutch blog, sorry) and as a security expert I'm always checking and improving my security. I'm amazed sometimes when I help people with a infected or compromised blog about the low level of knowledge they have about basic security. The problem is that it is not interesting UNTILL there is a problem. After they get infected its priority number one. When you leave your house, you lock it just like your car. A bit odd to have your car stolen and then think about locking it, get it?But, then again.. one will never be 100% secure. If 'they' can hack NASA, CIA sites, etc. I don't think we can protect ourselves against them.. I just a matter of making it more difficult to hack..

I admit that security isn't interesting to me either. As you said anyone can be hacked but I bet the hackers will be much more interested in hacking Nasa and CIA sites than wasting their time on my WP blogs. The interest in security depends on the blog's (site's) value. :)

That indeed is one of the reasons for hackers to target a site, but be aware that every blog or site is interesting for hacker. By infecting many blogs and sites hackers can steal traffic, infect visitors with Malware, install phising malware, send spam from your blog/site etc. etc. So almost every blog is a target. If they find an vulnerability they simply 'scan' the internet and will probably find your blog as well. A few days ago there was a security breach with a WordPress plugin (ToolsPack), within a few days 30.000+ blogs were infected with Malware that spams about fake antivirus software..

I plan on creating my own blog system on PHP soon. The language provides a lot of security that you can implement through the scripts you write. I guess I'll be able to figure out and address most of the security issues myself. :)

I made my first blog with Wordpress - you can't go wrong there, so easy to navigate.

Wordpress would be the good starter for you.
There are lots of themes/framework themes that you can customize for your blog. You can install themes that make your blog unique.
There are lots of plugins where you can simply search and install and you can get facebook sharing button in a second.
As andreasup said, Blogger is a good blogging platform, but I personally prefer Wordpress too.
