Last year I switched one of my phpbb boards to vbulletin and have recently moved another board from phpBB to SMF. The current version of phpBB is a spammer's heaven and it was getting really difficult for me to keep the anti spam mods upto date.

SMF's templating is a nightmare, everything else is just fine.

I say phpBB. I can customize mine to never allow spambots, have an auction addon, make my own templates, add subforums, etc etc etc.

All depends on how much effort you are willing to expend.

I've always been a fan of phpBB. I've tried SMF but I just don't get it. I heard it was easy to code though.

SMF template system is indeed complicated.
    But much more powerfull.
    Personally I preffer SMF :)

I would say phpbb, have tried smf but never liked it. As for the spambot problem you might want to try Anti-Spam ACP it is quite good and ever since I have installed it I have no bot registrations.

I prefer SMF over phpBB, especially because of ease-of-use. :)

I have used both for quite a while and it seems phpBB takes a lot more time and effort to run. Spammers seem to target it more often (since it is the more popular package) and you usually need to install more 3rd party hacks to get it to do many of the things that are built in to other packages. I'm eagerly awaiting the v3 release version of phpBB to see how the others stack up against it.
