    It really doesn't matter. Your ranking power comes from your offpage efforts, meaning your backlinks, not from whether the forum is in the subdomain or in a folder.

    I think the first is better because it may be what people are used to seeing, but as far as SEO is concerned it probably does not make any difference at all. They are both sub-domains of mydomain.com

    however, both methods are using the same domain name. But, in my view it is better to place the forum within top level domain i.e. domain.com/forums rather than using subdomain name..
