Which of these two designs is better?

Hey everyone, first time posting in this section of the site.

Anyways, here is my current layout:

So which of the two do you like better or think has more potential? Any suggestions?

 

I think the new one (testing) is better.

It's a new fresh design and more professional

 

I like the first design way better... but i like either really dark designs or really bright designs and the second one is an in-betweener

They both are nice though!

 

i think you need to combine both actually. the first one is nice but way too dark and bland. The second's lay out isn't that nice, but the coloring makes it catchy. If you can some how combine the red of the second to make the first more eye friendly I think you may have something.

This is the typical reaction I get when I ask this question and that is why I ask it so often. Some people like the first layout (not sure why actually, I assume the dark colors) while other people prefer the clean layout of the second design. I never really thought of combining them to form one, but I'm guessing thats something I could try out.

What do you think are the best aspects from each?

 

I like the first one. The layout is much better than the first. As moneyspeaks said, you can borrow the color from the second to make the first eye catchy. The only thing I didn't like in the first design is the long blank area on the top (after the logo).
I can never think of a design without a menu at the left side

Ads are blended quite well, but like the possibility of you getting banned because of the images next to the ads.

 

I think the first design fits better on different screen resolutions. When you look at the second one in an 800x600, the site doesn't layout properly.

 

the second one is better. As it looks very unique. However, may need to work on the wording in the Introduction Section. I barely read it.

Awesome, I'm getting more of an idea of what I want to do now. I think I'll try keeping the actual layout of the page the same as the first one, but try to make it cleaner by using the second design's color scheme as well as some of the "web 2.0" feel.

I also think that the drop down box would really benefit the user on the site, so do you think I should incorporate that in some how?

 

I like the second one. However you have more room in the first one to put your page links and everything there but the new one looks more professional.

yup.. the older one looks more friendly and the latest one seems like streotype..

 

To be honest, I find it hard to choose between them. They're both okayish, but a little too dark and bland. You need to integrate more images into the second design, whilst keeping them away from any Google ads you have.

Personally I find dark backgrounds to be too oppressive, and just generally harder to read. You need to add a lot of things to them to soften the effect.
