There are several methods that are commonly considered to be effective in link building and I think they really are if combined.

    - getting backlinks from strongly related sites
It's important to get more one-way backlinks than reciprocal ones as they are more valuable for search engines.
One-way backlinks embedded into content or surrounded by a brief text description look natural for search engines and help your site gain higher rankings.

    - being selective in directory submission
The main point here is that you get backlinks to your subpages, and thus add more value to your website in general.
Besides it's useful to submit articles with links to your site to article directories.

    - using pay per post services
Study the blogosphere in your niche and consider ordering some posts linking back to your website on blogs and forums or write posts yourself.

I think that the effect of different link building methods depends a lot on the peculiarities of your niche, and there are no special order or combination of them. It's really specific for every site.

Don't be smart for paid linking.... or any link exchange

Google become smart enough to penalties you if you was found in such activities.

Just make you links relevant to your website category.

I have a friend who is like a SEO guru...
He can get anything in top of google (yes, anything) with time and the right budget.

He always says you need a good seo'ed site, and then get a lot of backlinks, also payed backlinks from high PR websites.

    The best:
For general link building I use Receive Links and Link Vault

Getting blog entries I use PayPerPost.

    The worst:

Coop - Absolutely destroyed sites I used it with.
Manual Link Exchange - Are you kidding me? My time is too valuable and tracking it manual SUCKS. Use receive links or buy an automated exchange package. But I prefer RL.

    Good luck! :)

    Most Effective to least effective:

    1) TheBlogSolution & BloggerGenerator
    2) Social Bookmarking (if you write good articles you can get A LOT of bloggers to link to you with 0 effort)
    3) Trackback Spaming (not only for good links but also good traffic, you'd be surprised the blogs my trackback spammer can hit)
    4) Directory Submission
    5) Last but not least link exchanges.

NOTE: Some of the these are considered Black Hat, they will NOT negatively effect your main site if used the worse that can happen is that the sites and blogs them selves will be removed from Google, Yahoo and MSN.

People will tell you that Black Hat Link Droping will get your MAIN site removed from the SERPS that is untrue, as long as you don't do Black Hat on the site its self its completely safe. Again, if these techniques could get sites removed from the SERPS I would use them on my competitors site instead of mine, I could generate 1,000,000 backlinks to a site in a few days with a hundred or so domains using theblogsolution, if that got my competitors banned I would be using it for that, unfortunately it doesn't.

To me .................... Just imagine having network websites mean you own have plenty of websites.... approximately atleast 35 websites for one business scenario............ these are called supporting websites for your main website.................. and they grab traffic for the main website too. ......................... This is so natural and trusty method,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and proven............... My SEO Boss is an industry Guru and this is his main technique. and really really practically having 100% success ratios.
