Who here targets? Who here shotgun sprays???? Fess up???

    What's that?

A marketer that targets is someone who focuses marketing efforts on select sources that are known to hold high ratio's of typical audience that will buy serve or use the product service etc the marketer offers.

A marketer that shotguns is someone who has the approach "Market everywhere, take names later.." and goes on a spree of wild marketing at every chance they get.

I target... I feel sniper is the BEST way to market otherwise you are just wasting bandwidth on non-targeted lol traffic.

    So which one are YOU?

Nice post. Clearly targeting works well, but the shotgun spray approach can have its benefits if your product has a broad enough appeal. The problem is that everyone thinks their product has a broad appeal!

Anyone have any examples of a good shotgun spray campaign?

As for me, I'm in the process of trying both. So I'll have to get back to you about which works best ;)

You have to be very adaptive and move very fast some times if you want to take advantage of a new marketing technique. That my theory on it anyway ;)

In the initial stages (assuming you're serving a niche), it's good to set your target in mind and shoot accordingly. Over time, it's all about leaving your Marketing Myopia behind and create additional products/services in addition to the ones you already offer, and potentially use the shotgun spray then. That helps you do mass marketing which sometimes comes pretty cheap (as an expense :p) and helps build your brand as well.

It sounds like there are some really talented individuals reading this thread, I appreciate your responses.

Niche marketing and "serving function and purpose of the internet" website marketing are two completely different beasts to tame. Niche marketing requires more of a sniper shot to reach the targeted audience, while the function or purpose sites can sometimes bennefit from using shotgun tactic that just spews href everywhere. :)

It really depends on what it is that you are marketing whether or not to be strict by the book of either shotgun or sniper. It boils down to what type of website you are trying to market as which technique will work better.
