Which link exchanges are worth it? Confused!!

I have a few PR 4 sites -- each of them has a links directory page. So I get 3-way link exchange requests in my inbox all the time. And of course I'm happy to honor links that fall right in my niche, have a good PR, and have useful content for my visitors.

But... the thing I always struggle with.... is where do I draw the line? How closely related to my niche should the link be?

If I have a site about teaching elementary school, should I be willing to add link about teaching jobs for college professors? How about a link for a martial arts studio? How about links for a greeting card company? How about a large link directory website that has a high PR?

I don't want to hurt my sites and have them go down the Google keyword search list because I'm adding too many unrelated pages. But, then again, some of these people are willing to put my site on nice PR4 or PR5 pages if I add their site.

So.... where do I draw the line? What should I accept/decline?

    I appreciate any thoughts/help/input.

    Any links are good links.
But if they are related its an even better one.

Any links in are good links... but what about links going out?

Should I put semi-unrelated outgoing links on my links page just to get my link on a PR3? Or a PR2?

And how closely related to my niche to the links have to be?

outgoing links cant cause any harm unless u keep stuffing them all together....
google doesnt like 50 links all crowded up on one page....
other than that its safe to link out without limit

Just a short advice, if those sites are worth it, why not exchange links with them?

I get link exchange requests all the time and ignore them. It takes too much time and effort to monitor reciprocal linking and search engines devalue reciprocal linking imo

One-way links are definitely better than reciprocal ones. If you gain some use out of link exchange or 3-way linking just make sure it's trustworthy. You need to monitor such links all the time. It's a bit annoying but really necessary.

And of course your out-going links should be as relevant to your site as possible. Relevancy of links is a prior point in link building. Both OBL's and incoming links should look natural for search engines. In this case they will be more valuable for your SEO.
