Which keyword should I focus in?

I have a bit of a dilemma. I have been tweaking my site, in particular the title, and managed to get my secondary keyword from the 2nd page to the first page of Google. It's a pretty good spot for this keyword.

The problem is my primary keyword drops when I do this. If I change the title to move my primary keyword up, and I'm talking about moving from mid-30's to about mid-20's or 4th page of Google to 3rd, my secondary keyword moves from the 1st page to the 2nd. My primary is a very tough one with about 22 million hits on a google search. The secondary KW gets about 2.5 million hits.

What do think? Focus on the primary keyword or be happy with the secondary being on page 1?

    Thanks,
    Tom

Hmmmm.... Strange. After being in the top 10 to 30 for several months on the keywords I mentioned above, my position dropped significantly two days after this post. I'm down to the 60's. Coincidence?

    I'd be happy with a #1 position.

I don't see what else it could be.

You may want to take a look at your traffic to determine which keyword brings you the most traffic when it's optimized. I'd guess it would be the one with 2.5 million hits (i.e. less competition), but that's not always the case.

I'd say yes, coincidence. I believe Google is dancing - either "again" or "still", depending on who you talk to. I seriously doubt your post has anything to do with the changes. ;)

Thanks folks. Google obviously didn't like something I did recently. If I can just figure out what that was.

    Hi Tom,

Do you track the changes you make to your website? If so, you should be able to determine if any of them coincided with the SERP changes, and test to determine if it's cause-and-effect.
