Which Keyword Research Tool, They all give different numbers

I'm trying to figure out what keywords to target for a site and have tried a couple of keyword suggestion tools, but the problem is they all give drastically different numbers. Not only are the numbers different the ranks are also very different. The number #1 keyword phrase on one tool is #15 on another. Is there any one tool that is generally accepted as the most accurate for keyword popularity?

I've tried a lot of the tools, free and paid. I used to recommend Trellian because a lot of the seo gurus do but I found out the hard way that there numbers are too high (based on my rankings for a keyword, number of clicks and what Trellian predicts for the number of daily searches). So, I recommend WordTracker. The numbers are lower, much more accurate and not as skewed as one's provided by SEs.

It can be frustrating and confusing deciding upon which free keyword tool to use, which is why I went ahead and ordered myself a year's subscription to Wordtracker. Give's me peace of mind that I'm targetting the right keywords. Although there's always the possibility that some of the values are inaccurate. I guess it doesn't matter that much in the long run if I'm targetting enough of them on my websites.

    Follow two steps
    1) use dp keyword suggestion tool to find relevant keywords
    2) use nichewatch to plan attack on individual keywords :)

Thanks for the great info and links, I will definately try them out!

I do have another question regarding keywords and phrases. Lets say you find a good combination of keywords and phrases with excellent KEI, how do you protect them from your competition copying and modifying them?

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
