    It DOES matter!!

I would encourage people to register the domain name at whatever domain registrar they are comfortable with. They should shy away from deals that give them a free/discounted domain when purchasing hosting as most of the time the customer is not given access or a control panel to the domain.

#1 Rule: If you like/want your domain register it with a company that gives you 24x7 full access to it, not "included with your hosting" situation.

It matters alot, just because the one with the best deal doesnt necessarily mean that you will get the best features or quality and reliability. I would recommend a well known quality registar with the best features and quality optional hosting if you want. You get what you pay for

I like to register it with my host (1and1), it just makes it a whole lot easier (don't have to transfer it). AND they don't seem to be charging me renewal fees...

    Few points to ponder:

    1.Good value for money?

2.Full acccess to your domain and make sure your name appears as the owner not your registar or hosting company.

i tend to register names with Godaddy but i've never gone with their hosting services, my sites are hosted on other companies.
    :)

He was asking (I thought) whetehr you should register it with the people where you host. So my 'it doesn't matter' related to that connection between domain registrar and host. That sure doesn't matter - I'd even recommend separating the two so one company is not fully responsible for what happens with your stuff.

Of course it does matter to use a reputable registrar or host. There's a load of crap out there.
