i believe the best way to market new website is :- 1- make a good landing page, because it gives good impression to visitors . the good impression will make people want to come back to the website . let's take facebook as example i think the main thing that made this website succeed is the design and the colors + the Correct decision in choosing the domain name the good Correct decision of choosing color + good design made people feel comfortable with facebook thus huge number of people are using it which lead to the success of this website . 2- make search engine optimized , search engine friendly website, so that people find your website when they search for some thing . 3- give some free stuff ( example free e-book ) 4- give good quality services . 5- do some paid to promote ads(ptp) (some ptc ads ) so to make ordinary people know about your website ( during these PTP campaigns remove all ads from you website , you can re-put ads again when all the ptp and ptc campaigns finished .after that you can buy advertising space at some forums (high traffic forums ) with lots of visitors so that these visitors know about your new website / services . or you can buy some google adwords ads . or you can use free banner exchange services ( this is also a good choice ) ,

My personal opinion about this question is that when you start your own business and build your website then the most important and enjoyable way to market your website is facebook marketing!! Building your fanpage related to your website niche can skyrocket your website and you can actually generate about 10.000 unique visitors per month from facebook marketing and its viral nature!! Next step is to find other useful fanpages related to your niche and start to interact and post valuable comments on them!!! With this interaction you will get internal links to your fanpages which means more people will actually see your content on fanpage!! The last step is to make external links in your fanpages which lead to your website. Generally speaking you can use the 50/50 rule in facebook marketing and start to see some results initially!! Now because of the viral nature of facebook, more and more people will actually see your fanpage and believe me that initially it will be a bit tricky but after a couple of months you will see extremely AWESOME results!!! i think paid advertising is a good way to market a new site. it will create an impression among the viewers that it's a legitimate site because you have enough funding for adverts.
