Bloomtools, I do not think that any software is used for link building. Instead it is used to understand and analysis the value of link building. If there will be softwares for link building, most of them will results into your site banned from google since google does not like automated softwares. Link building should be done manually. Great page content which is useful to users will automatically attracts inbound links to the website.
I am not much sure about it. But i heard you can make daily 1000 links through software. Is it helpful ? are those links are valid ?
I think it means that it is a link from an external page to your page. The more the better as it increases traffic, exposure and pagerank. correct me if I'm wrong!
A great way to do it is provide value thru forums, such as Digital Point, where your website is relevant to its readers. You will build relationships and in your url signature, you provide your link. Be careful with software that automates this and lumps your link in with a list of a 100 others... someone sees that and automatically associates it with spam.
