I personally use Photoshop to design the mockup and Dreamweaver for coding purposes. They both are quite awesome :)

Hi, when I started I didn't have a clue which one to go for because there were so many web editors. Now I am in no doubt whatsoever. My preferred editor is Komposer. It's a wysiwyg editor (what you see is what you get). It's easy to use and it's FREE! It will do everything you need it to do. Ultimately the best one is the one that works for you and you're comfortable using it. Just google Komposer and you'll get it. Hope this helps.

I don't like advanced IDE's. They're too clumsy and insert too much bs into your page.

As a code editor i use codelobster, firefox+firebug as primary debug tools.
For graphics i use the gimp.

Adobe Fireworks is way more comfortable to use for designing websites.

It may not be as powerful as Photoshop, but you have enough tools to accomplish most of the tasks needed to design a website.

There are 2 real stages in creating your website - 1) creating and arranging images; and 2) installing these onto the website. If you're just starting out, then you probably won't want to pay for expensive software such as Photoshop - although this is by far the best s/w for playing around with images. There are 2 free options - GIMP and Fireworks. Gimp is a lighter version of Photoshop but can do most of the things you would want Photoshop to do. When it comes to actually building the website, then again there are two simple choices: WordPress and Komposer. Dreamweaver is the third option. In practice, I have gone for WordPress. It is ideal for blogging and its CMS features mean that it can be used for almost anything.

If you ask about creating a code than I would say CofeeCup software or Microsoft Expression Web (from free apps - NOTEPAD). For graphic: Photoshop, ACDSee Canvas 12 or Real DRAW Pro 5.

Many people would swear for Adobe Dreamweaver, but the truth is that you should use whatever you are most comfortable with.

I suggest you to try Notepad++ on Windows, Smultron on Mac, and GEdit on Linux, if you develop simple websites. All of these are freeware.

If you work on complex web applications, try Aptana Studio or Komodo Edit, both being free and cross-platform.

I'm personally using an app called Coda, by Panic.
