Just look at ASK.com they advertise on TV a lot, but google does way better. Online will always work better because, no one is going to get out of the sofa and go to there computer.
It does depend on what you are trying to market. For my services (website & graphics design), the online market would be more beneficial. For things such as tooth paste, that would clearly be offline marketing.
