Agreed. It's going to be different for everyone. HostGator, Lunarpages and HostMonster are reliable.

I have/had sites hosted on the following:

    BlueHost.com - no problems
    Lunarpages.com - have had a few issues
    Mckremie.com - no problems
    Godaddy.com - I won't host here anymore!

I think hosting is hit or miss. My biggest thing is support and when I call I want to be able to understand the person on the other end.

1&1 was okay for me, but they seemed less reliable than dreamhost.

You all may like hostgator, but they do not allow image or file hosting sites. Get caught and your site goes bye-bye.

I can tell you who not to go with and that would be Lunar Pages.

    Stay away from Lunar Pages!!

i say godaddy, because it is reliable and they wont up and run off on you, which has happened to me when using a cheap, no name company. I'm sure there are plenty of small time companies out there, but if you have never heard of them i wouldn't try them.

In my experience, i had a domain registered and hosted for this small time company that i had never heard of, but it was really cheap, so i jumped on it. It was OK for a while, a couple months or so, i built up my site, promoted the domain a bit, exchanged some links, than one day i receive an email stating the server would be deactivated, that i should back up my files. I immediately emailed my contact with the email i received and asked him whats up, he said don't worry, its not being shut down, you don't have to back up anything. Well After a week or so, my site was down. I contacted the hosting support, and was told a the guy running the server ran off with everything. Anyways, i never backed up my site, i lost the domain, I had to restart everything, i even changed the Company name.

I learned my lesson, i hope no one has to go through it, if you do decide to go with a small time host, cover your tracks to protect yourself.
