I will say there is no good free antivirus. Buy Kaspersky its the best antivirus in the moment for me.

Even premium nobody can say "X antivirus is the best" . There are people who , despite having the latest greatest , up to date antivirus software , continue to get regularly infected.

    Take a look and decide.

I am using AVAST free version and it works well for me. ;) Try it.
Avira is good too but I don't like it much.

I used so many anti-viruses on testing based free as well as paid.
Right now i stuck with Kaspersky Internet Security 2013:cool: (multi -user) according my needs.
As you said you can use Avast / Microsoft Security Essential both are free and good anti-viruses.

Avast isn't too bad. Most importantly make sure you have a good firewall to prevent that crap from getting on your cpu in the first place.

I'm using Unthreat Antivirus, it's not as well known as the other antiviruses mentioned, but it's free and it gets the job done. I recommend it because it's easy to use and doesn't slow down computer much.

I personally would say AVG Free or Comodo, Comodo can be a bit complex but defently worth it!

Avast (30 days) is the more popular antivirus. Its update process is very easy and working very fine.

Avast is the best free antivirus than any other because it has many security features like a paid software.

Kaspersky is definitely the best. Lightweight and not full of bulkware. I'd recommend them strongly.
