vbulletin, is a forum software. But it is not free. You can try PHPBB or SMF, they are free.

    PHPBB and SMF are good.
But for SMF, sometimes you need to edit the codes for running themes and MODs.

I have played around with phpbb, SMF and vBulletin ...

    Here is my verdict :

phpbb (FREE) ... Difficult for beginners (especially with the customization bit) but a great support community helps out a lot

SMF (FREE) ... Very nicely made and easy to customize once you stick with it and get used to it ... Support community could be better but SMF has a lot of good third-party addons to it's advantage

vBulletin (PAID) ... the best money i have ever spent on a forum software ... This extensive forum does not come cheap (especially if you plan to purchase addons which are also in most cases PAID softwares) however, this thing is stable as hell and easy to use once you get your hands around it (will be faster if you have prior experience with other forum softwares) ... Help is available but you will need to be patient with vBulletin in the beginning ... I used to be a SMF fan but vBulletin has bought me !!

My recommendation : vBulletin ... it's worth every cent ... be prepared to shell out quite a lot of money for addons though ...

I actually recommend MyBB. It's the best forum software out there. I think its even better than the paid ones.

Best paid one is IPB; have it on my website too.

Expensive but if you can afford it then great ;).
