    I've seen many types of encoding:

    utf ... iso ...
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

    What would be the standard or best encoding for a website?

    Well in general, the best way to go is: utf-8
    But if you have a site in some specific language, i.e. chinese, you might consider some specific standard.

    UTF-8 is the best and most common one.Specially for multi language sites developers use UTF-8 to fix PHP acceptance errors.
