    To my experience, Virtue mart is a smart choice :) It's free but it is good enough ;)

    There are plenty of great ones except VirtueMart. Really great ones are Hikashop, JooCommerce and BreezingCommerce.

    The latter appears to be the most modern one because it is brand new and is as free like VirtueMart.

    In the end it depends on how easy it is to setup for your particular requirement and how customers can adjust it.
    I would focus primarily on checking how easy tax, theme and price setups are.
