Magento is probably today's #1 eCommerce platform.
some programs took Magento platform and developed it as its open source.
I took part in a conference with magento CEO, he spoke about the fact that Magento's biggest success is the open source idea...even though it turned out to be not so profitable for them in the long run this is just one of the major facts they are #1 today

I use Opencart. It's free and for some $$ you can buy a nice template and get into business.

osCommerce is absolutely free under the GNU General Public License and caters very well to most people’s needs. Unsurprisingly, considering how easy it is to set up and run, it’s extremely popular, powering over 228,700 online stores. Such popularity does come with a significant downside however- it makes it harder for you to differentiate your store from the thousands of others out there. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you’re going to need to use some of the 5,800 add-ons available, some of which cost money.

EasyStoreHosting is best Online E-Commerce Store creation software.

I have tried it, and it genuinely works.
The best thing is that provide "technical support service" free of cost.
So you have to do anything by yourself, just shoot a mail to them, they will do it for you.

Stay away from Jigoshop if you are using Wordpress. Jigoshop is full of bad code and bad people. It almost sent us broke. They steal from you Paypal account and will not provide refunds on products you did not use. They are dodgy. I urge anyone not to deal with Jigoshop at all.you can only use their plugins, which they charge rip off rates for. Their e-commerce conflicts with so many other plugins it is ridiculous. WooCommerce is the only Wordpress plugin worth using.

Keep clear of Marketpress. They offer 24/7 support which they charge for and do not deliver. Very expensive learning exercise.

I started out using godaddy shopping cart software and it was absolutely terrible. Have changed over to shopify and it's amazing and very intuitive. You can see the difference of my two websites and they both took the same amount of time to build. Actually the shopify one took less time.
Has anyone used magento and shopify? What is the difference?

PHP is the best and easy to use. Lot of popular scripts for ecommerce made by PHP only.

Magento is great. Ecommera is also good. If you're looking for a platform on a smaller scale try square squarespace.com who I used to build my new site ecommentz.com
